Law

Application by Guardian News Media & Ors (Supreme Court, 27/01/10): The Court quashed measures introduced by Gordon Brown to freeze the assets of al-Qaeda suspects, heavily criticising them in the process. In a second ruling the court lifted the anonymity orders granted to the men after a challenge by media organisations.

R v Tokeer Hussain, Munir Hussein (Court of Appeal, 20/01/10): Political debate has again erupted over the right to defend one's home following this case. Closer scrutiny reveals the Court's reasoning.

Pell v Bow Valley (Privy Council, Nov'09): The Court issued useful guidance on breach of contract cases involving 'Wellham Park' damages.

Hundreds of small independent solicitors across Scotland could be forced out of business after four of the biggest law firms in the country voted through reforms that will enable supermarkets and banks to provide cut-price legal advice on services such as house purchases and small claims.


27/1/10 (UK): Naming Youth Offender Breaches Human Rights Balal Khan, now 14, of Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, was sentenced to three years in a young offenders' institution after admitting raping a 20-year-old woman when he was 13. He also admitted a further charge of robbery. During the case at Stoke Crown court Judge Paul Glenn allowed the naming of Khan, to act as a deterrent to others.


26/1/09 (UK): Kelly Evidence To Be Sealed For 70 Years. Why? The death of weapons expert Dr. David Kelly in July 2003 was sufficient to raise questions, coming only days after it was revealed he had challenged one of the major claims for invading Iraq four months earlier. Now, the fact that details about the investigation of Kelly's suicide will be kept secret for 70 years has produced speculation over the true cause of his death.
